Love is usually seen as a blessing and it surely is. Having another person that will always be here for you, share your life, share your hopes and dreams and fulfil them sounds like the maximum anyone can ask. Love is always shown and the final happiness and force in the world….But love can also be tricky and difficult, the most harmful feeling...And this story would be, perhaps, the best example you have ever seen.
Devon had had a girlfriend named Cheryl. It was, in fact, a quite long and strong relationship at the point that if you would have asked some of their friends they will have totally bet for them to get married and be happy forever…So much for a surprise when Devon and Cheryl broke out. At first no one could even believe it but then they discovered the bitter truth beneath the apparently sweet relation and that was that Cheryl was totally obsessed with Devon, a destructive obsession that resulted in the destruction of their mutual trust and love slowly turning them into sheer control from the woman, that turned out to be much more anxious and strange than anyone could have ever imagined.
It took little time for Devon to meet and fell in love with Ayleen, a young energetic girl. His relationship with her was more stable and trustful than the one he had with the Cheryl because Ayleen seemed to be nicer and far less anxious and not obsessed with control at all. Cheryl did not carried it along so well because she turned even more obscure and obsessed. She sent Devon tons of messages every day, trying to make him remember all the times he declared his totally unconditional love for her, all the great moments they have shared and all the plans they have for the future. It totally made Devon upset, furthermore because Cheryl also started to send him letters and trying to follow him on the street. At first Devon did not cared too much but as her relationship with Ayleen started to grow up, it felt simply terrible because his ex was always trying to cause damage to the new couple. They though the best option was telling the police but Devon refused.
´´She is totally obsessed with me but now I have redone my life with you so she simply has to understand it. Cheryl will get tired of sabotaging us sooner or later. We do not want to get involved in police matters´´
Still, Ayleen will not allow Cheryl to get any further in her intentions, she did not wanted to hurt her, just talk , so she decided the best way of solving it was simply speaking with Cheryl so she could finally understand that she must left them build their new lives together. Where Devon was on his job, Ayleen took her car and drove to Cheryl´s house, determinate to finish the problem with a few kind words that everyone could have understood.
When Devon finished his job he could finally read the message Ayleen let him on the phone.
´´Honey, I know you will probably disagree but I am heading toward Cheryl´s house right now. I will speak to her and make her understand. I am sure that there will be no problems between two adult woman. Kisses´´
Devon´s heart went out of control when he read that. The man ran to his car while sending another message to Ayleen.
´´No! Don´t you see she is obsessed? She can be dangerous and hurt you!´´
But he received no answer so he drove as fast as he could to his former girlfriend´s house with his heart beating so hard that Devon feared he could simply die while driving. But he managed to reach his goal. Cheryl lived in a small cottage. When Devon arrived, he found the door opened…That was not right. He sneaked inside the house knowing that something have happened and nothing good at all.
When he arrived to the living room he could not believe what he saw. On the living room, decorated, as he remembered, with strange rock formations and a couple of comfortable chairs, was Cheryl, dressed with a white dress he had never seen before. She had a strange smile on her face…but the most impressive thing was that, on the living floor, was Ayleen. At first Devon feared that she could be hurt. He tried to run and help her but Cheryl made a hand gesture that somehow stop him on his tracks, like if an ancestral and supernatural fear held it.
´´Not a step further´´ Said Cheryl. If he get any closer she would probably hurt Ayleen.
´´What do you want???´´ Shouted Devon.
´´Consider that a test for your so called, perfect love´´ Said Cheryl, with anger. Then, she took Aylee´s mobile phone from one of the tables and showed Devon´s message on the screen. Then, the ex girlfriend threw away the phone against a wall and totally shattered it. ´´For being my former true love you seem to be happy calling me obsessed and crazy and things like that´´
´´What have you done to Ayleen? Are you OK my love?´´
Ayleen tried to say something. She opened her mouth but no sound emerged from it.
´´Do not even bother´´ Said Cheryl ´´She is not able to speak any longer. She is muted as a part of my spell¨´
´´Spell? What spell? Are you crazy?´´
´´Do not call me crazy just because of you could not understand me!´´ She shouted, pointing Devon with her finger. ´´I am not crazy! I have learned a power threshold that you poor ignorant people could not even understand!´´
´´This is just because we broke up? You were over controlling me…´´
´´That´s not the point! You can lie! I need the magic to say without any trace of fault who is the girl that has your hearth! If this girl is supposed to be your real love…then you shall be able to release her from the muting spell´´
´´You are totally crazy!´´
´´Oh am I? I does not matter as long as the truth is revealed. Then, let the magic decide…Do you love me or…?´´
Then, she made a gesture with her hands and a whirlwind of sparkles came all over Ayleen for a second and , then, disappeared all along the girl´s clothing, letting her naked. Only then Devon could see the depth of the changes Cheryl has caused to Ayleen.
Her long black skirt disappeared and revealed that Ayleen´s legs were now turned into a strange frame covered by pale scales like those of a fish. The scales made it´s way until Ayleen´s stomach and down to her feet, but these were no longer human limbs because they ended in a couple of half formed fish fins. Her legs were mostly but not totally fused as the process of transformation was not completed yet.
´´Do you love the monster that your dear Ayleen has turned into?¨ Laughed Cheryl ´´Yes! YES! See her now! It is not human anymore! Look at that tail and fins! Do you still love her?´´
´´That is witchcraft!´´ Could only say Devon still trying to understand what was happening. He was in shock, totally sunned. It was real witchcraft, a situation that he could only imagine in magic tales now was real.
´´It IS´´ Claimed Cheryl ´´But I did not meant to hurt any of you! I promise! This is just a test for true lovers! While we were a couple you always told me I was the love of your life and now you are telling the same to her! Since we both cannot be your true love I think it is fair to give a definitive answer!´´´
´´Buy why…why have you done this to her? The mute spell was not enough?´´ Asked Devon, with a combination of fear, anger and sadness.
´´I was expecting that question. I wanted to test you further in case your own heart is confused about what do you feel for her. Now Ayleen is a sea creature, you both belong to different worlds. The land and the sea. You will never be able to walk with her on the park, take her for a dinner, for the cinema! Not even introducing her to your friends! And besides…would you love a woman that is half fish? That is not even human? Well…if your love is strong enough you can pass trough all that barriers. If it is not…then the answer is clear.´´
Devon stared at Ayleen, she still had opened her mouth trying to say something she could. Tears emerged from her eyes as she knew Devon would never choose a monster that belongs to a different world. But anyway she kept moving her mouth , but her voice was totally muted.
Devon kneeled on the floor, almost at the edge of the nervous breakdown. Cheryl smiled.
´´We don´t have all day! Do you want to say something?´´ Claimed the witch.
Devon stood on the ground for several minutes before he took a deep breath, stared both at the mermaid and the witch and said.
´´Jeff…´´
´´What?´´ Neither the witch and the mermaid expected that.
´´Jeff…´´ He repeated looking to Cheryl in the eye. Then he stood up ´´That´s the name that Ayleen and I are going to give to our first children when we had it. We have imagined us both as father and mother so many times. We have imagined sharing our lives together forever…and we will´´
´´What does that…? She is a mermaid now…she…´´
´´Jeff…´´ Said a delicate feminine voice. Cheryl jumped backwards as she saw the mermaid girl moving her lips but with voice emerging from them this time. ´´And our daughter will be named Rena…´´
´´What??? That cannot be…!¨´ Claimed the witch. Then she spent a few moments staring at the couple, the mermaid and the boy and finally shouted ´´Fine! I admit she is your true love…! She can regain her voice…but…but…but she will keep that form as a punishment! As a punishment for stealing you from my side!´´ With that, a whirlwind of smoke and sparks covered Cheryl and, once it vanished, let no trace of the witch.
Devon ran to Ayleen side and caressed her hair.
´´My love…I am sorry…´´
´´Don’t worry¨¨ Smiled the mermaid girl ´´We will find a way for being together forever. I do not care being a mermaid…not as long as you are my true love´´
